Every sheet has the traditional frame boxes: two small boxes for the balls in frames 1–9, three in the 10th frame, and a large box for the running total.
How bowling is scored
| Result | Symbol | Score for the frame |
|---|---|---|
| Open frame | numbers | Pins knocked down with two balls |
| Spare | / | 10 + pins on the next ball |
| Strike | X | 10 + pins on the next two balls |
| Miss (gutter) | - | 0 for that ball |
| Foul | F | 0 for that ball |
| Split | number circled | Scored normally — the circle just records the split |
In the 10th frame, a strike earns two bonus balls and a spare earns one, so a bowler can throw up to three balls. A perfect game — twelve strikes in a row — scores 300.
Worked example
Take the game X, 7/, 9-, X, -8, 8/, -6, X, X, X-8-1. Frame 1 is a strike followed by 7 and 3, so 10 + 7 + 3 = 20. Frame 2 is a spare followed by 9: 20 + 19 = 39. Frame 3 is an open 9: 48. The running totals are 20, 39, 48, 66, 74, 84, 90, 120, 148, 167 — a final score of 167. Type the same rolls into the calculator (it’s the default) to see every frame.
Scoring tips
- Wait for bonus balls before writing a frame total after a strike or spare.
- A strike’s bonus can include up to two more strikes — three strikes in a row (a “turkey”) are worth 30 in the first frame.
- Mark splits by circling the first-ball count; it doesn’t change the score.
- Check the 10th frame carefully — it’s where most scoring mistakes happen.
- Maximum possible score after each frame: a perfect game goes 30, 60, 90 … 300.
Running a bowling night or league
- Print one sheet per lane and one per game, and write the date and lane number at the top.
- Agree the order of bowlers before the first frame so turns run smoothly.
- For mixed ages, use bumpers or a handicap so everyone can compete.
- Keep finished sheets to track averages over the season.
- For team games, total each bowler’s final score at the end of the row and add the team scores together.
